It is a truth universally acknowledged that AGGS students are talented writers…

While Jane Austen might have meant her opening line ironically, we offer our sincere praise to three talented AGGS wordsmiths who have each achieved recognition in the Portico Sadie Massey Awards.

Tamara P in Year 11 has won Key Stage 4 Reading Winner for her book review of Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Tamara produced a sophisticated review that the judges applauded as being ‘well-structured and considered.’

Ruth R in Year 11 also received a special mention for her ‘funny’ review of The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. The judges were impressed by her use of satire.

It wasn’t just in reading that AGGS had success; we also received recognition in the creative writing prize in which students were asked to write a narrative set in the north of England. Sanjhbati C in Year 10 was Highly Commended for her short story, The Crow Calls. Judge, Hallie Fletcher, said that it was: ‘A story deserving recognition for the strong imagery used. Powerful language and a thrilling journey with a dark theme. Crows being the messenger of death, this story really brought a sense of unique writing ability to the entries. I really enjoyed this; I would love this to be expanded into a longer piece. Based in the Peak District, this story really gave me chills.’ Ella Otomewo also praised the ‘chilling horror story’ for being ‘intensely atmospheric.

Tamara’s fantastic prizes include a special invitation to adopt a book that needs restoration from the Portico’s library collection. Tamara and her guests will be invited to the library to choose a book for restoration. This will then be sent away and, when returned, Tamara’s name will be put on a book plate inside and it will be kept on the library shelves for as long as the Portico Library exists. Sanjhbati and Ruth each receive books and a library gift pack.

Videos of the students reading their entries will soon be available on the Portico Library’s website and social media channels, so please seek these out and listen to their fantastic pieces.

We are so proud of our students’ wonderful achievements – well done to you all!
