On the 25th of November, Y8 were lucky to be able to see Mathew Bourne’s adaptation of ‘The Nutcracker’ at The Lowry. It was immense fun, and everyone enjoyed it. Halfway through lunch, Y8 left to the theatre, and upon arriving were registered then seated inside. Midway in the interval, students could buy food, drinks, and Lowry Merch. Afterwards, they watched the second half of the dance before heading home.
Most people will know the Nutcracker as the ballet; however, Mathew Bourne is a contemporary choreographer who takes original pieces and makes them into his own stories. The story is based on E.T.A Hoffman’s fantasy, ’The Nutcracker and The Mouse King’. Mathew Bourne’s choreographed piece keeps most of the same aspects, changing only the setting of the story as well as some of the characters. The story follows Clara, the main character, as she escapes from her orphanage with the Nutcracker and her fellow orphans. She goes on many adventures, whilst the two spoilt kids from the orphanage try to ruin their fun. After they steal the Nutcracker, Clara goes on a journey to find him. This takes her to Sweetie land, where she tries to take back the Nutcracker. (We’re not going to spoil the plot for you!)
The experience was much enjoyed by everyone present in the theatre and was helpful for a part of the Year 8 school dance piece, ‘The Frozen Lake.’ Thank you Mrs Anstey and the dance department, for making such a trip possible!
